A GRAND Furness mansion made £330,000 when it went under the hammer.

The stunning Grade II* listed Tytup Hall, near Dalton, sold for £5,000 over the guide price when it went up for auction on Thursday evening.

Auction House Cumbria said the Georgian property, set off Broughton Road, attracted a lot of interest and was sold to a local man during the auction at The Coronation Hall, in Ulverston. It is understood that the 18th Century mansion will be renovated by the new owners for use as a family home.

The five-bedroom Tytup Hall, which stands in about two acres of grounds, had at one time been on the market for £1m.

In addition to the bedrooms, there are three attic rooms, a one bedroom cottage attached called The Peathouse and a working glasshouse.

The architectural features include sash windows, pediments, pilasters, cornices and friezes over two fireplaces which have been carefully preserved over the centuries, having been in the same family for many years.

Auctioneer Colin West said: "There was a lot of interest. It does sound like a real bargain but there will need to be upgrading."

Mark Plant of Auction House Cumbria had said the property and grounds is like a mini-estate. Mr Plant said: "We have had a lot of interest in Tytup Hall. It's historical and it's unusual to have a property like this."

A plot of land at Thornyfields, near Crook, in the Lake District National Park, sold for £83,000. Bidding started at £30,000 for the land which has planning permission to hold one static caravan.
