EMERGENCY repairs to fix underground electric cables on a busy main road in Dalton are set to be finished by tomorrow.

Part of Market Street had been dug up causing travelling chaos to many motorists as a large section of the road was closed in both directions.

Councillor Wendy Maddox, member on Barrow Borough Council for Dalton South, described the work as a "nightmare," but residents living in Market Street insisted that the work had not caused them any disruptions.

Toni Law, 35, said: "It has not been a problem for me. I prefer the road being closed off because it is a lot quieter and I thank my lucky stars that they are doing it now instead of when the children go back to school."
Mrs Law believes that speeding cars are much bigger concern on the busy main road.

She added: "Some cars treat this road like a race track and I've seen a number of potential crashes. We never see any police presence to try and stop people speeding and it is only a matter of time before someone gets knocked over."

Geoffrey Buckley, 80, who also lives in Market Street, said: "It hasn't bothered me at all really. I have heard hardly any noise and they've quietly got on with a job that has to be done."

The work was carried out by Electricity North West and was supposed to carry on for a few more days.

They have apologised for any convenience caused and a spokesperson said that the work was "essential in order for customers to receive a reliable power supply to their homes and businesses."
