A DALTON school community is proud to have supported an appeal to help a foodbank.

Dowdales School rallied together to collect 317.7kg of food donations for Barrow Foodbank. The secondary school's collection is the the equivalent to providing 759 meals to families.

In June Barrow Foodbank revealed they had a month's supply of food left, with stock at an all time low, but with the demand being exceptionally high. In the school holidays families are faced with finding an extra meal each day for their children.

The Mail , which made a £500 donation to the charity, set up a 10-tonne target through the Tonnes of Tins appeal, and the community has really got behind the cause.

Following a successful collection at Christmas for the foodbank, Dowdales then launched an appeal for staff and students to bring in donations before the summer break.

Sian Waplington, a history teacher and head of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development at Dowdales, said: “The response from our students and staff has been fantastic; we are so pleased to be able to help the Barrow Foodbank provide much needed supplies to the local community.”

A representative from the foodbank came to school to collect the donations and met with students and staff.

The Barrow Foodbank has satellite centres in Ulverston and Millom and offers help to families in need in those towns.
