CONCERNED residents have voiced their objections to plans for hundreds of homes to be built in their town.

Residents spoke out during a public consultation event at Dalton Community Centre about the Local Plan, which sets out development in the borough over the next 15 years.

The draft, which is set to be finalised and sent to Westminster by February 2017, incorporates proposals to build 1,990 houses across the Barrow borough by 2031, with 326 of these set to be built in Dalton.

Dalton town councillor Liz Colver successfully convinced the council to block Derek Barnes, a builder from Blackburn, from developing 79 houses in fields at the junction of Long Lane and Newton Road in November last year.

The proposal could still go ahead after Mr Barnes appealed against the council's decision, with a final move yet to be made.

Despite the uncertainty, Mrs Colver is determined to ensure that the land is protected with the council keen to build 24 houses on the greenfield site as part of the local plan

She said: "If they build houses I think there is a grave risk of flooding down Newton Road. The junction is already an accident blackspot and there have been two major accidents in the last year which has seen people cut out of their cars with welding gear and the road closed for six hours.

"With increased traffic and congestion, they are asking for trouble on that junction."

Sheana Bark, who has lived in Station Road, Dalton, for 43 years, objects to land at Greenhills Farm being earmarked for 69 houses.

She said: "I don't want the developments to encroach on greenfield sites and I'm worried about the risk of flooding. I don't want people to buy a house on that bit of land and then for it to be ruined by floods."
