A COUNTY councillor who has helped to transform a dilapidated town building into a modern community hub has called on residents to join them in celebrating its eight-year refurbishment.

Today and tomorrow, Dalton Community Centre in Nelson Street, which was formerly known as the Drill Hall, is hosting two public open days to give members of the community the chance to explore the new-look premises.

According to Barry Doughty, Cumbria County Councillor for Dalton North, almost 5,000 people walked in and out of the centre last month, which he believes is testament to the hard work put in members of the Dalton Community Association.

He said: "I am very proud of what we've achieved. It has been a great team effort and wouldn't have been possible without stalwarts who came along and made things happen.

"These open days provide a great opportunity for anybody who has wanted to know what has been going on to come and look at the library, the newly decorated hall and to enjoy all of our new facilities."

The open days are being held from 10am to 4pm on both days with Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock set to talk to the Film Club this afternoon and Dalton mayor Nick Perie set to attend tomorrow's event.
