A PROPOSED overnight taxi rank for Dalton has been turned down after objections were raised by residents.

Residents and businesses in Market Street, Dalton, opposed a move to introduce a new taxi rank on the street.

Twelve objections were received by Cumbria County Council about the Market Street proposal by Barrow Borough Council.

The concerns included that the taxi rank would displace parking for residents, which was said to already be at a premium. Locals also felt that it would lead to a negative impact on road safety in the immediate vicinity.

Objections stated that there was little, to no need, for a taxi rank in the area.

Concerns were raised about noise generated by the movement of the taxis and also taxi users who may loiter and be drunk or loud.

A petition was put forward to the council, and residents and businesses worked together with county and borough councillors.

Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Barrow agreed with the recommendation to not give consent to the Market Street proposal.

Councillor Ben Shirley, who represents Dalton North on Cumbria County Council said: "Thankfully the council and local committee have listened."
