A DALTON man threw a TV remote at his wife then poured a pan of hot water over himself in a drunken rage.

Stephen John Cooper of Chapel Street, Dalton appeared at Furness Magistrates' court on August 23 where he pleaded guilty to assault by beating.

The court heard how the 57-year-old was at home with his wife Jennifer Cooper and their grandchildren on the evening of August 11 and became frustrated when back pain prevented him from playing with the children.

Defence solicitor Trystan Roberts said Cooper had told his wife of 38 years he was 'unhappy' before throwing the remote across the room which hit her in the arm as well as pouring a saucepan of hot water over himself. The children are not believed to have been present at the time.

Mr Roberts added that Cooper drank four cans of Carling, one bottle of wine and a third of a bottle of vodka before saying: "He has an enormous amount or remorse for what he did."

The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to be completed.
