DALTON hero Charlie Walker is celebrating winning a silver and a bronze medal with the UK team at the Invictus Games Toronto.

The inspirational former army private was a key part of the UK team who took silver in the wheelchair rugby event. Denmark overcame the UK by 23-18 in the final to win gold.

The Invictus UK ambassador also won a bronze medal in the wheelchair basketball for the UK, with gold and silver going to the USA and The Netherlands.

The 37-year-old coached the UK team to a silver medal in the sitting volleyball event at Prince Harry’s international sporting movement for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women.

The team sports stalwart is already a multiple Invictus Games gold medalist and a Paralympian. He competed at all three Invictus Games, the first was in London, then the second Orlando, USA, and was part of the Paralympics GB Team at London 2012.

The former Dowdales School and Dalton St Mary’s Primary School pupil suffered from meningitis in 2006 and as a result is now a double below-knee amputee. He was supported in his recovery by Help for Heroes. Mr Walker now lives in Retford, but his proud parents still live in Dalton.

In recognition of the support given to him by Help for Heroes, his mum Edith and dad Charles are active volunteers for the charity in Cumbria.

The UK Team hero was pictured chatting with Prince Harry during the sitting volleyball training.

Ahead of the Invictus Games, Mr Walker said being part of the UK Team gives him a reason to set new higher goals.

Mr Walker’s mum Edith Walker, who went out to Toronto to support her son and Invictus, said: “Charlie is very proud to be have been chosen for the Invictus Games for a third time, especially as two thirds of the team have not competed previously. “He opted not to compete in sitting volleyball this time to give others a chance and has been coaching to give something back for the experiences he has had at previous games.

“He has always enjoyed team sports and particularly likes the camaraderie of Invictus, not only with his own team mates but with people from other nations who he had met through sport.”

Mr Walker appears on the official Invictus Games Toronto 2017 images under the banner ‘Be Moved, Be Inspired , Be There’.
