A CONSTRUCTION worker from Dalton has been described as a "fantastic ambassador" for young people after he won a national award for his dedication to safety.

Glen Dacre was named as the Occupational Health and Safety Young Person of the Year after judges recognised his "excellent commitment" and loyalty to colleagues through his knowledge of health and safety requirements and risk assessments.

The 21-year-old, who works for Sellafield contractor Jacobs Stobbarts, was shocked to hear he had been picked as the winner.

"I am immensely proud of the recognition received for the efforts made, and for this award," he said.

"I was shocked and surprised to learn I had been nominated, let alone won. Thank you all."

Glen was nominated for the award after completing an Advanced Apprenticeship in Occupational Work Supervision with Barrow Training Partnership.

Keith Dymond, director of BTP said: "Feedback we have received from our other apprentices is that, when on site, they will carry out tasks given by their supervisors and not question safety issues for fear of losing their jobs.

"We applaud Glen for standing up for health and safety on site and hope that this award will encourage all apprentices to act in a similar way."

His employer, which undertakes decommissioning and other construction work at Sellafield, described Glen as a "fantastic ambassador".

Lee Holliday, safety officer for Jacobs Stobbarts, said: "This is an outstanding achievement which highlights a maturity well beyond his years.

"In winning this award, Glen has shown he can be a fantastic ambassador for Jacobs Stobbarts Ltd and other apprentices within industry today, further strengthening relationships and improving attitudes towards health and safety."
