STAFF at Dalton Community Centre have said its first summer running events for youngsters has been a resounding success.

A jam-packed schedule of fun and games was offered for children this summer.

Angie Fullard, community services officer for Cumbria County Council, said: "It has been a great first summer for us here in the Dalton Community Centre. Special thanks must go to our three young volunteers Sarah, Ellie and Callan who came along to help ensure all events ran smoothly.

"Our children’s activities provide the opportunity to mix with other children and introduce reading in a fun and innovative way. Many of our activities help to improve motor skills and hand eye co-ordination while feeding the imagination."

Just some of the events this summer included a sports day held at Ulverston Leisure Centre, a free film screening of The Wind in the Willows and a monster hunt which took place in the library, based in the community centre.

Mrs Fullard continued: "The facilities here at the Dalton Community Centre are fantastic and provide the library with so many opportunities to host a variety of events. Anyone who hasn’t seen the centre and our new library are most welcome to come along and take a look at all the hard work which goes into making this a fantastic resource for the Dalton community. The trustees and centre manager Pat Wilson do a terrific job.""

Mrs Fullard said the final hurrah of the summer was when local author Amy Stretch-Parker came to read her latest book, Peter Digs a Den , to an enthralled audience.

She said: "Amy recreated her book with imaginary play which the children thoroughly enjoyed."

As well as being a hub for children in the community the centre continues to play host to a range of local events.

Next week it will host a Macmillan Coffee Morning as part of their yearly World's Biggest Coffee Morning campaign.

It will be held at the centre, in Nelson Street, on Friday September 29 between 10am and 12pm.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy a cup of tea and some cake to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.
