A COUPLE left devastated after their beloved cat of 12 years went missing have thanked Evening Mail readers and the audience on social media after being reunited with their lost pet.

Tony Brierley and his wife had been travelling from their home just outside of Broughton to the Leece area almost every night for the past two months after their black and white cat Smudge escaped from a cattery at Urswick.

The couple were resolute in their determination to find Smudge and had placed a number of adverts in the Evening Mail pleading with readers to help them find their furry friend.

Last night, Mr Brierley contacted the Evening Mail with some wonderful news - Smudge had been found.

Mr Brierley said: "After making many many trips across the Furness area, we had a call today from a Mrs Proctor who farms in Stainton. Her husband had been mowing barley when a cat bolted from the field into a nearby stable.

"We went to the field to find it was Smudge and, after some enticement with fresh prawns, we managed to catch him; he is now home.

"We would wish to thank you for your help and all those people who took the time to contact us in an effort to find Smudge."
