The French bulldog is set to become the UK's most popular breed, stealing the crown from the labrador for the first time in 30 years.

So it's no wonder that Archie, Dalton's own famous Frenchie, now has almost 4,000 followers on Instagram.

His owner Andrea Rattray, 52, a teaching assistant from Dalton, already had a famous pug called Edd, who has 86,000 followers on Instagram, when Archie joined the family as a 12-week-old puppy.

Mrs Rattray, of Buttermere Drive, said: "We got Archie for Christmas 2015. I had been looking after my dad for four years and after he passed away my husband bought him for me as a distraction.

"They have got a lot of the bulldog traits in them so they're very lively and a bit more determined than the pug.

"He just wants to be cuddled all the time but he's got bags and bags of energy."

It took Edd a little while to warm to Archie but now Mrs Rattray says they are "partners in crime" and are always getting up to mischief such as uprooting the plants from her garden.

The breed has fast become a celebrity favourite with the likes of Lady Gaga and the Beckhams.

But Mrs Rattray echos the concerns of the Kennel Club and insists that no-one should get a dog simply because it's fashionable.

She said; "It's like everything else. What do we do when it goes out of fashion? A dog is for life."

For anyone thinking of getting a French bulldog, Mrs Rattray advises that you give them lots of exercise and always remember to put a coat on them when it is chilly outside.

She said: "It can be quite difficult to care for them compared to other breeds but you have just got to be aware of their complaints.

"They have quite a thin coat so Archie shivers in the cold."
