Dalton birdwatcher spots rare find

A FURNESS bird enthusiast got quite a surprise after spotting a rare find in his back garden.
Natural historian Arthur Evans spotted a group of waxwings in the back garden of his Dalton home that are more commonly found in Northern European forests.
Mr Evans was first alerted to the group of waxwings in the cherry tree at the bottom of his garden when he spied a bird’s unique crest in silhouette.
He said: “We saw five of them in the cherry tree at the bottom of our garden.
“There was no question of misidentification – they have a crest on the head.
“We saw them in silhouette first and it stood out like a saw thumb. I was tickled pink to see them.
“It was quite a thrill.”
The waxwing, which is pink-beige in colour, with red secondary wing feathers, has been known to migrate to Britain in the winter, but usually when the bird’s main food source – the rowan berry crop – fails in their native Northern Europe.
When the birds do come to this country, they arrive country between October and March, sometimes staying until May.

The Waxwings are a regular visitor to our Dalton trees. They tend to congrigate around King Street.
