Cumbria road improvements underway

A £40,000 Highways Agency project to improve signs around junctions along the A590 in Cumbria is underway.
By Gareth Jones
The six week project, which started a fortnight ago, will be completed by Thursday March 28 and involves the installation of new and improved signs at junctions around Newland, Arrad Foot, Backbarrow, Newby Bridge, Canny Hill and Levens.
The work is part of a package of measures resulting from the Highways Agency’s revised route management strategy for the A590 which was revealed last summer after consultation with businesses and local people.
It is hoped that the new signs along the A590 will improve users’ awareness of the junctions and associated traffic movements, leading to improved safety.
All of the work will be done between 8pm and 6am each week night or during the day at weekends. Only the overnight work at Backbarrow and Canny Hill will involve the use of temporary traffic lights to manage vehicles past the work.
Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said: “Signs at these locations will be brought up to current standards improving journey safety and awareness approaching junctions.”
