A Lake District water which inspired Wordsworth for sale on eBay and believed first lake in the world to be offered on the online auction site.
The selling off of Esthwaite Water, between Windermere and Coniston Water has been described it as a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Owner Nigel Woodhouse said he chose eBay because he wanted to broadcast the literary and natural importance of the lake to the world.
Esthwaite Water covers 280 acres and is the largest privately-owned lake in Cumbria.
Mr Woodhouse said he wants to sell the lake and its established leisure businesses because after 32 years in charge, he is approaching retirement age.
Esthwaite Water is mentioned by Wordsworth in his poem Expostulation and Reply and is the location for Lines Left Upon A Seat In A Yew-Tree.
Beatrix Potter invented Jeremy Fisher on the banks of Esthwaite Water, and described it as her favourite lake.
There is also a café in the artist's theme and 26 of her images, painted around the shores of the water, hang in a studio.
Mr Woodhouse said the lake is the largest stocked fishing lake in the North West and acts as a trout fishery.
Included in the 15 year lease from the Graythwaite Estate are the entire water and land on the south west shore, a Victorian boathouse, fisherman's lodge, shop and café.
There is also a slipway and jetty for boats as well as disabled facilities. The auction will work on a best offer basis and Mr Woodhouse is available to show prospective buyers around.
