Cumbria gallery teams up with Google Maps to offer virtual tours

AN art gallery in Cumbria has joined a project with Google to allow people to virtually travel through the tourist attraction and view artwork online in extraordinary detail.

The Great Picture triptych
Lady Anne Clifford's "The Great Picture triptych".

Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal is the latest partner in Google’s Art Project, which is a unique collaboration with some of the world’s most acclaimed art galleries and museums.

The building has received the ‘Google’ treatment, and Street View technology allows the viewer to move virtually around the gallery, selecting works that interest them and clicking to discover more.

As well as featuring nearly 100 works from the Lakeland Arts Collection, The Great Picture Triptych was chosen to be photographed in extraordinary detail using high resolution photo capturing technology, enabling the viewer to study details of the brushwork beyond that possible with the naked eye.

Hard to see details suddenly become clear such as birds hiding in the pattern of ‘young’ Lady Anne’s dress or the incredibly small and delicate writing throughout the triptych.

You can see The Great Picture Triptych at: www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/the-great-picture and the inside of the art gallery via Google Maps.
