Cumbria fire crews devastated by cuts decision

FURNESS firefighters say the only people who will suffer from fire service cuts will be the public.

Yesterday 10 of the 11 local county councillors voted to reduce the number of fire engines in Barrow and shut Dalton fire station completely.

Speaking after the vote, Dalton crew manager Roy Coward said he and the rest of the team were devastated by the decision.

He said: “We just can’t quite believe it happened. We were sat in the meeting since 10am and then suddenly seven hours later it took them about two minutes to vote and that was it.

“We were told that someone would come and see us on Monday and explain what is going to happen.

“I think this decision was already made. We are devastated.”

Barrow firefighter and Fire Brigades Union spokesman, Ben Jones said: “They talked a lot about other services such as buses then it was us. We are absolutely gutted.

“The only one people who are really going to suffer because of this decision are the public.”

Have your say

I & my fellow colleagues from Dalton fire station are devastated with the vote to close our station, we have been fighting the proposed closure since it was announced back in October. We have had great support from the general public & most of the local town councillors during our campaign & I would like to thank them for their support. We realise that savings have to be made but we feel that reducing frontline services is very dangerous, I fear for the safety of the public & for the remaining firefighters. It has been proven with the incidents we`ve had recently that the Dalton appliance is needed in this area.I cannot believe that councillors would vote for something like this in their own area & without fighting against it, I always thought that after being voted into office they were suppose to represent their area, they could`nt even be bothered to turn up to a public meeting regarding the proposals we had organized in Dalton last month, I hope that the general public remember what these councillors have done when they want to be voted back into office.

To the people of cumbria. Stand up at the next elections and vote these idiots out. We pay there wages , We vote them in. Anne Burns and her ilk should be ashamed of themselves. Local people voting to cut local life saving services, an utter disgrace. You all need to hang your heads in shame. One day you or a family member may need this service and it will not be there. Disgusting.
