Crew shooting film about 50s Dublin heads to Barrow

CELEBRITIES have been walking the streets of Barrow as part of filming for a new flick about Dublin in the 1950s.
Noble, directed by Stephen Bradley, tells the true story of Christina Noble, a philanthropist who endured a childhood of poverty and hardship in Ireland.
After escaping to England and starting a family, Mrs Noble flew to Saigon in 1989 to set up The Christina Noble Children’s Foundation to help children suffering the effects of the Vietnam war.
Filming in Ho Chi Minh City has already taken place, and now cast and the 100-strong crew have brought the project and a host of celebrities to the streets of Barrow.
Filming locations have included the Princess Selandia boat next to Morrisons, and Anchor Road and Buccleuch Dock Road on Barrow Island.
Rob Harris, publicist for the project, said: “Some of the areas of Barrow had that period look we were trying to find. It’s a beautiful little town, we hope to see more of it.”
Fans of Downton Abbey will recognise Brendan Coyle, who plays Mr Bates in the period drama, and fantasy fans will know Liam Cunningham from Game of Thrones.
Ann Taylforth, town centre and festivals manager at Barrow Borough Council, said: “Ourselves, Cumbria County Council, Associated British Ports, landowners on Barrow Island, Barrow police together with Creative England have worked extremely hard to bring this business into the town.
“There will be a large crew on site, bringing business to local hotels and putting considerable revenue into the town through hire of facilities.”
The period of the film set in Barrow will document Mrs Noble’s youth in 1950s and 60s Dublin. Mrs Taylforth added: “I am told by the location manager that this is a great opportunity for the town because we have some of the best preserved tenements in the UK, and I am sure we will pick up other location business when similar scenes are required in the future.”
Mr Harris said the film is due to premiere in October at one of the film festivals.

I've read the story of Christina Noble "Bridge Across My Sorrow" and it's a great tale of one womans strength and determination to fight for something so worthwhile! I've even got a signed book by her! She's an awesome woman who's story and the story of the children she's fighting for are a must read. Delighted they chose Barrow for a location, it's great to see investments like this coming into the town.
