Ulverston couple’s plight moves Barrow AFC’s heroes to reunite

THE Barrow AFC squad that made history when it lifted the FA Trophy in 1990 is reuniting to raise money for an Ulverston family hit by tragedy.

When dad-of-two Paul Coulston watched Ray Wilkie’s legends win at Wembley 23 years ago he had no idea they would one day take to the pitch to support his loved ones.

The Coulstons’ story touched the hearts of people across the country after the 37-year-old and his wife were both diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses.

Now the AFC heroes will take on Mr Coulston’s former team, Barrow Celtic, at Holker Street on April 27 to raise money to help the family.

Mr Coulston, who was given three to five years to live after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease in April, said: “I just can’t believe it – it really took me back. It is amazing what people can get together and do.”

He said he has fond memories of travelling to Wembley for the final in 1990.

“These are the players that people my age and older remember,” he added. “It was such a big thing for the town.”

Mr Coulston’s wife, Clare, has just a 30 per cent chance of surviving an aggressive form of cancer.

Paul Rawlinson, who used to play with Mr Coulston for Barrow Celtic in the 80s, said he and other team members felt the need to do something to help the family.

Once the decision was taken to get the old Celtic team back together, the 1990 AFC team was the obvious choice for their opposition.

Mr Rawlinson said: “They are held in such high regard around the town. I am absolutely delighted.”

Neil Doherty is among the cup-winners who will be taking part.

The 44-year-old said time may have taken its toll on some of the players but he was keen to do his part for such a worthy cause.

One former member of squad, who now lives in the USA, is even planning to fly back specially for the match.

After the match, Tony Chilton’s Wembley shirt will be among items auctioned off to raise money.
