Council awards £17.5k to causes

COUNTY Councillors in Barrow have awarded £17,500 to help fund a variety of youth-related projects across the area.
Barrow Local Committee approved plans on Wednesday to provide money for the following causes:
l £4,000 to Walney Musical Theatre towards the cost of them putting on a production of Peter Pan this year.
This money will help towards the cost of hiring scenery, properties and costume hire.
l Barrow Sixth Form to receive £1,500 to help pay for the cost of buying lighting equipment.
‘The Furness Influence’ theatre group (made up of students in the sixth form) will use the lighting to support them when they go out into the community to undertake their work.
This equipment will also be available for other schools in the area to use.
l £12,000 has been allocated to the Furness Education Consortium (FEC) for the ‘Raising Aspirations Together’ project.
FEC is made up of heads and principals from Furness secondary schools and colleges who are working together to share good practice, resources and focus on developing training which will raise standards in classrooms in the area.
Grant money for the projects comes from Barrow Local Committee’s 0-19 Services budget – a funding stream aimed at improving opportunities and activities for young people across the district.
Councillor Ray Guselli, Chairman of Barrow Local Committee said: “The money we’re providing is aimed at helping these excellent schemes and groups to continue making a positive difference to the lives of young people across Barrow.
“We as a local committee recognise the valuable contribution they make to our communities and are delighted to be able to support them.”
