Colleagues of Cumbria child porn man ‘extremely sad’

COLLEAGUES of a disgraced fire chief have spoken of their shock following his surprise confession to distributing child pornography.

And a top Cumbria fire chief has vowed the actions of fire manager William McMillan Wyllie (pictured) will not be allowed to tarnish the positive image of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

At Lancaster Crown Court on Wednesday Wyllie pleaded guilty to three counts of distributing indecent photographs, two counts of distributing indecent video files and a further count of publishing an obscene article.

The 49-year-old, of Rating Lane, Barrow, is a former traffic policeman in his native Scotland and also served in Strathclyde Fire Service before his move to Cumbria in 2005.

Wyllie worked across the county in his role as a manager working with crews in Barrow, Ulverston and Kendal. He has been suspended on full pay since his arrest on October 19 2011 when his family home was raided and laptops and mobile phones seized.

Adrian Buckle, Cumbria’s assistant chief fire officer, said: “We are extremely saddened and shocked by what has happened.

“But these are very much the actions of one man and what he has done will not be allowed to tarnish Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service’s good name.

“It goes without saying that this individual is not a representative of the high calibre of our firefighters and staff who do a tremendous job in helping keep the people of Cumbria safe.

“Our internal investigation is still ongoing and will reach a conclusion as quickly as possible.”

During his brief appearance at Lancaster Crown Court this week it was revealed Wyllie was caught as part of a Met Police investigation into the HIV positive prolific paedophile Steven King.

It emerged Wyllie had been using internet chatrooms to swap and request images of children but until his change of plea he had maintained he had been the victim of a hacker.

The Evening Mail attempted to contact Wyllie at the family home yesterday but was told he did not wish to comment.

He is due to be sentenced on May 23.
