Chance to nominate Barrow community heroes

IT’S that time of year when people are urged to nominate their unsung community heroes for the Love Barrow Awards 2013.

The annual awards are launched today and people are encouraged to put forward those special people, or groups, whose every day efforts make a difference to the lives of others.

The accolades will again be presented at a sparkling awards ceremony with red carpet entrance at The Forum in March.

The closing date for nominations is November 5 at 2pm.

All nominees receive a certificate and the three nominees shortlisted in each category will be invited to the ceremony.

Steve Robson, Barrow Borough Council neighbourhood manager and member of the Love Barrow Awards organising committee, said: “We all know from living our daily lives in the area there are many special people working to ensure our area stays the special place we all know it is.

“This is everyone’s chance to make sure these people are recognised for their efforts.

“The Love Barrow Awards last year were a real celebration of all that is good about our town and the wider Furness area and we hope people will make the effort again to nominate for this year.”

Individuals or groups who have been nominated in previous years can be nominated again.

The organising committee encouraged people to include as much information as possible about the person or group they put forward.

Rebecca Rawlings, of the Barrow Community Safety Partnership and the Love Barrow Awards organising committee, said: “If you know a person or group you think deserves to be recognised, then please take a few minutes to fill out a nomination.

“Make sure those special people you know do not miss out on their chance to be recognised and nominate them today.”

The Junior Wardens – Barrow volunteers, aged eight to 11, who use their own time to work on good causes – were the only people to be nominated for two awards at the 2012 awards.

Andy High, the senior neighbourhood warden in charge of the wardens, encouraged people to nominate people whose contribution to the community they value.

He said: “I was really proud the kids were acknowledged for all the hard work they’ve done and to see the look on their faces when we told them they’d been nominated for two awards.”
