Callous thieves snatch much-loved pet in Ulverston

CALLOUS cat thieves have left an Ulverston family heartbroken after snatching a much-loved pet.

Miaow, the female tabby cat, was snatched from outside her home in Lund Terrace, after a silver pick-up pulled up.

Owner, and mother-of-three, Helen Bennett has launched an appeal for information after she saw a young man – believed to be between 18 and 20, leap from the vehicle and pet the cat before snatching it and fleeing from the scene.

Miss Bennett said: “At first I thought he was going in to next door because he had just parked up in front of my drive.

“They had seen the cat there, then they got out he was stroking it and then I heard someone shouting “grab it” and before I could do anything they drove off.”

Miss Bennett said her children, aged two, nine and 12, have been left devastated and she wants to warn other pet owners of their pets being at risk.

She said: “You hear of cats being taken for dog fighting but I’ve not heard much of that happening around here.

“There are a few cats around but Miaow was the only one you’d see and would be friendly.

“The lads at the building site across the street love it.”

After four years at the address Miss Bennett said she is hopeful her cat will return and has urged anyone with information to come forward.

She said: “I’m just hoping that they have taken her somewhere and she will turn up.

“I did hear laughing, it was as if they thought it was a joke when they took it.”

Police confirmed they are investigating and it is understood to be an isolated incident.

A spokeswoman said enquiries following the incident are ongoing and a full search of the area was carried out.

The man who snatched the cat is described as slim and between 18 and 20 years old.

Anyone who saw a silver pick-up type vehicle in the Lund Terrace area at around 10pm on Tuesday has been asked to contact Ulverston police on 101.
