FLOWERS that are currently brightening up Barrow were cultivated just down the road in Dalton.

The colourful blossoms that can be found in Duke Street, Portland Walk and in car parks around the town centre, were tendered at Tithe Barn Nursery in Long Lane.

Eleanor and Steve Fisher, directors of the nursery, and son Joss, have been providing the flowers in the town centre for several years.

The flower baskets on show in Dalton and parts of South Lakeland are also their handiwork.

Mrs Fisher said a special effort has been made this year and added: “Normally they are just begonias, but they are mixed this year. They are lovely and colourful. It just brightens up the town.

“We start taking cuttings in late January and keep potting them on. They will last right up until late frost now.”

The pretty petals are seen by thousands of shoppers, motorists and flower admirers every day.

And consequently, business has been blooming at the Dalton-based nursery.

Mrs Fisher said: “Once we start putting them out in town people start coming up for baskets. We are pretty much sold out when we do that. It’s great publicity.”

Tithe Barn Nursery also produces the pansies seen around Barrow from autumn until spring.
