Barrow and District Disability Association – which organises a Christmas grotto visited by a record-breaking 517 children this year (previous record 499) – received the latest £1,000 donation from the Lake District Farmers Armstrong Family Charitable Fund.

One of the youngest visitors to the grotto yesterday was 12-week-old Theya-Rose Shacallis with her mum, Kelly Henry, of Salthouse, Barrow.

Self-confessed “proud Barrovian” Margaret Burrow MBE, honorary secretary of the BDDA, 72, of Newbarns, said of the donation: “It’s an absolutely amazing surprise. We didn’t realise this was going to happen. The money will help us to continue our work.

“We cannot thank them enough for this. We have not decided exactly what the money will be going on because to be honest we are still in shock. What we do know is that it will be put to very good use. It will go towards making sure children have a better future.

“It’s very unexpected but I don’t mind. I like surprises.”

A cheque of £1,000 is given to good community causes every month throughout the year, with three cheques being given in December in light of the festive season.

The money was raised by a celebrity chef event held at Clarence House Hotel, Dalton earlier this year.

Another three-night celebrity chef event is planned at Clarence House from Jan 31-Feb 2 next year, with the money again set to be distributed to community groups.

The BDDA helps people with disabilities across Barrow and Furness.

Mum-of-two Mrs Burrow, a former Love Barrow Citizen of The Year award winner, was given the title of MBE in 2002 as recognition for her charity work in the community.

The grotto was held over the last two weekends. Mrs Burrow said: “Our grotto is always very popular with children. And it’s for both disabled and able-bodied children.

“It’s great because you can see all the children coming together and mixing. It’s just a magical time.

“I’m a big fan of Christmas myself.

“We make sure Father Christmas has a good present for the children. I hated my girls receiving a bit of old tat at a grotto when they were young, so we always make sure Santa is equipped with really good gifts that kids will actually want.”

The charity acts as a service for disabled people in Barrow.

Late Barrow businessman Ray Armstrong wanted to ensure community groups, organisations and local good causes from across Barrow and Furness, Ulverston and South Lakes, and Millom and South Copeland, benefited from the fund.
