YOUNGSTERS welcomed in the Year of the Snake with a special Chinese New Year activity day.

Hindpool Sure Start Children’s Centre in Bath Street, Barrow, organised the event yesterday to give children aged between one and eight the chance to take part in oriental-themed craft activities.

The youngsters, and their parents, got the chance to create colourful snake pictures and make Chinese lanterns.

Donna Phillips, family support coordinator at the centre, said: “We just wanted to celebrate the Chinese New Year really. One of our mums is Chinese and she has been teaching the children all about it.”

Little Lewis Kyle, 15 months, was hard at work making a paper lantern.

His mum Salena Irvine, 31, from Roose Road, said: “He’s been coming to the centre since he was six months old and he’s just moved up to the toddlers group. It’s good for him to do different things and you get to keep his work as a memento.”

Racheal Dickinson attended the event with her daughters Ashlee, six, and Faith, five. She said: “The classes are really good and they get to do activities you wouldn’t think of at home.”

Carrie Silvie, 24, said taking her five-year-old son Jack to the event gave her the chance to let him play while she cares for her three-month-old daughter Esme.

Youngsters aged two to four at Lynwood Day Nursery, Newbarns, also got into the spirit of the Far East with a Chinese food tasting session.

Sarah Leech, 24, key worker at the nursery, said: “We had a mixed reaction really, you could tell which children tried different foods at home.”

The food was provided free of charge by Wailam Yung, of Yung’s Chinese, in Lesh Lane.
