Box of kittens dumped at the side of a busy Barrow road

A GROUP of helpless newborn kittens were left to fend for themselves at the side of a busy road.

Five tiny kittens and their mother were dumped outside the Animal Welfare Furness in Rawlinson Street, Barrow, at around 6.30am on Monday.

Luckily, a member of the public found the kittens and they are now being cared for at the shelter before they are rehomed.

Centre manager Elaine Montaghami said: “It was about quarter past seven when a member of the public found them outside and gave us a ring.

“There are five kittens and the mother, and they are all black.

“It was very dangerous to leave them there as there was no lid on the box and they could have escaped out into the street.

“Their mum could have run off in fear or the kittens could have fallen out.

“The cats are all fine now. They are actually very nice, they are all very friendly and their mum is loving.

“I think they have actually been well cared for up to now as they weren’t spitting.

“If the people who left them had just given us a call it would have been a lot easier.

“Normally either ourselves, Animal Refuge or the RSPCA will be able to take kittens and if we can’t then we normally get back to people within a few days.

“People leaving animals on the doorstep doesn’t happen a lot but there was a case the other week where a lady was walking her dog down at Furness Abbey and found a box of kittens.”

For more information about the centre, ring the charity on 01229 836955 and ask to speak to Elaine Montaghami.
