Books capture Barrow children’s imaginations

AT a time when people are using computers, tablets and e-readers at ever-younger ages, it seems – among children at least – there is still a place for the humble book.
Every Tuesday afternoon, the Barrow Library comes alive with the sounds of youngsters being entertained by tales of cheeky children and adventurous animals.
The Storytots programme, which runs from 1.30pm to 2.15pm, has started up again after proving a hit with both toddlers and their parents.
Run by young people’s area librarian Erin Hughes, each session starts with readings from popular books before the children split up to play with the games and toys of their choice.
Mrs Hughes said there was simply no substitute for a well-written children’s book that could capture children’s imaginations.
“Books are essential, really,” she said.
“The programme promotes language development and is a chance for the children to interact with others before they start school.
“We have a range of books that the children enjoy, including ‘touchy feely’ ones that they can interact with, so we try to cater for all ages.”
Naomi Mills and her three-year-old daughter Summer are both frequent visitors to the Barrow Library session and are soon going to be attending a similar programme at Roose.
She said she had noticed a distinct improvement in her daughter’s social skills since having the opportunity to mix with other children at the library.
“We come as much as possible because Summer loves books,” she said. “We’ve read books to her since she was a baby.
“We’ve been to some of the other toddler groups, but she wasn’t as happy at those as she is here.
“She used to stay back but now she is more outgoing.”
