Bikers to form a ‘rolling road block’ A590 protest

HUNDREDS of motorcycle enthusiasts will form a ‘rolling road block’ on the A590 this Sunday to demonstrate against new European legislation.
The event, being run by the Motorcycle Action Group – which has 86 groups spread across the country – will see riders heading out from Greenodd service station, travelling at a steady 40mph along the A590, A591 and then the A65 until they reach the regular biker meeting spot Devil’s Bridge in Kirkby Lonsdale.
The protest is taking place to allow the riders to express their frustration over new proposals by the European Union (EU) to restrict motorcyclists’ ability to modify new machines, right down to being able to choose their rear tyres.
The new rules will also curtail the sale of ‘aftermarket’ parts and add greatly to the cost of new bikes in the future.
“It’s about the EU’s legislations, they are unfair, but there are other issues as well,” Paul Turner, the group’s representative for Cumbria said.
“We are also protesting about all the different stages motorcyclists have to go through to get their licence.”
Paddy Tyson is national campaigns manager for the Motorcycle Action Group. He said: “We haven’t seen any evidence for the EU actions.
“ They want all parts to be sealed so we can’t alter the bikes ourselves. It’s extreme.”
The group staged a similar event back in September which was very successful.
“There was about 40,000 riders who took part across the country,” Mr Turner said.
The group is hoping that this event will be just as successful.
“If it’s a wet day, there won’t be as many but if it’s sunny we are expecting a couple of hundred on the A590. Lots of people have shown interest on our Facebook. There will be a lot of riders from Barrow,” said Mr Turner.
There will be 12 demonstrations in total, with two in the north west, one on the M6 as well as the one on the A590.
The riders will set off from Greenodd at around 1pm on Sunday.

I would like to know how many of the so called demonstrators really know what the cause is all about! Not just out on their mopeds to cause nause and have a laugh for the day!!!

Actually No 1, my road tax for my 650cc bike is more than twice as much as it is for my car. Also, there are no restrictions on whatever modifications I want to make to my car. The Government does not tell me what clothing I have to wear when driving my car. When I learnt to drive,there was no restriction on the power output of my car, whether that be the one I was learning in ( Golf GTI) or the one I drove after that, yet bikers are restricted by additional burden by people who have no idea what they are talking about and have provided no evidence to support the need for additional legislation. Hence the reason we are demonstrating.
