Bikers’ South Lakes road trip to help brave couple

MORE than 100 bikers are expected to set off on a tour of the South Lakes this weekend to raise money for an Ulverston couple battling serious illnesses.
Fundraiser Mike McPhillips is planning three big events to support Paul and Clare Coulston – starting with the motorbike ride.
The group will set off from the Old Farmhouse in Priory Road, Ulverston, before heading to Kendal, Bowness, Ambleside and Coniston en route back to the pub.
Mr McPhillips, 49, of Holly Bank, Ulverston, said: “Over the last quite a few years I have been organising motorbike rides and skydives, but this year, after doing it for quite a few years I have decided I am too old and I should take a backseat.
“I read (about the Coulstons) in the Evening Mail and thought we would add to their funds.”
Mr McPhillips is planning a trio of fundraisers for the Coulston family, including taking a rowing boat out onto Windermere. He is also planning a skydive as part of his fundraising extravaganza.
Paul Coulston, who until recently worked as deputy head as St George’s Primary School in Barrow, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last April.
The condition, which attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord and stops the muscles working, gives the 38-year-old between three and five years to live.
Meanwhile, his wife, Clare, is battling an aggressive form of oesophageal cancer. Doctors say the Barrow police sergeant, 37, has only a 30 per cent chance of surviving.
The money raised will help the couple, who have two young children, plan for the future.
The bikers will set off on Sunday at 11am and on their return will celebrate their achievement at the Ulverston pub.
Mrs McPhillips said: “We think there will be more than 100 people – it will go on into the night.”
There will be entertainment at the pub in the evening and Mrs McPhillips said she hopes everyone involved will have a good time – as well as raise money for a very worthy cause.
