More than 700 companies will be involved in the supply chain, extending to almost every postcode in the UK.

Up to 85 per cent of the supply chain cost – around £3.55bn – will be spent in the UK.

But the local economy will especially feel the benefit. Mr Johns, who was promoted to managing director in October last year, said: “It’s great for the local economy. In terms of hotels, if you try and book a hotel in Barrow on a week night it’s difficult because of the number of people already coming to support the programmes.

“This is going to provide lots of opportunities for local businesses and also have a knock-on effect into the broader economy which has got to be good news for Barrow and the local area. It certainly will create and sustain jobs more broadly in the community.”
