Silence in Barrow to remember millions of victims

A CANDLE was lit and a minute’s silence observed in Barrow to remember the millions who died at the hands of the Nazi regime.

Trade unionists, councillors and anti-fascist campaigners joined the service in the Trinity Church Centre in Warwick Street to mark the Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration.

The solemn occasion was also designed to address what organisers, Unite Against Fascism, describe as present-day fascism – in the form of the British National Party and the Greek political party Golden Dawn.

Touching real life extracts from people persecuted in the Holocaust were read by speakers such as Steve Forbes, Barrow GMB union representative; Councillor Brendan Sweeney, Barrow Borough Council deputy leader; and Councillor Bob Pointer, Barrow Trades Union Council secretary.

Those in attendance then joined in saying the recitation of Holocaust survivor Pastor Niemoller’s testimony.

Paul Jenkins, Unite Against Fascism’s North West organiser, told the Evening Mail: “It’s important to remember all the victims of the Nazis in the Holocaust, but also we think it’s important to learn the lessons from the past to make sure that never again is such an atrocity allowed to be repeated.’’
