Roa Island Gala Day

THE warm sun smiled down on Roa Island as the RNLI crew and volunteers held their summer gala.
Plenty of visitors boarded the vintage bus which was performing a park and ride service to yesterday’s fund-raising event.
Rampside princess Alex Barrow opened the day, alongside the mayor of Barrow Dave Roberts.
Then it was time for everyone to have some fun.
Entertainment came in the form of a display by the Tamar class all-weather lifeboat Frank and Anne Wilkinson and the inshore lifeboat Spirit of Tamworth.
Meanwhile on land people enjoyed having a go on the climbing wall, trying their luck in the coconut shy and browsing the different stalls. There was also a tombola, face painting and the Casualties Union.
A boat jumble event was held for the first time, which according to organisers went down especially well.
Chairman of the Ladies Lifeboat Guild Ann Hayes said: “It was a fantastic day and great weather but without the fantastic people of Roa Island supporting it, it wouldn’t have been possible.
“The ground is private property and they gave given it to us for the day. There were people out at 8.30am putting up tents and setting up.
“We are one big family and we all help each other out in different ways. The mayor came and he was fantastic.
“The ladies guild raises about £25,000 a year for the RNLI. We are all long-standing
members and we’re all very pleased and proud to be part of the lifeboat family.
“It was absolutely wonderful and I want to thank everyone who has come along and supported us.”
The day raised around £1,900 for the crew.
