THE most beloved characters in children’s literature came alive on Thursday as South Cumbrian schools celebrated World Book Day.

Children swapped their uniforms for costumes of popular figures such as Where’s Wally, Scooby-Doo, Tigger and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.

This year, Roose Primary School had the rare honour of being one of only 10 schools in the country to have a vote in the Blue Peter Book Awards.

In a coup for the school, both the books its students voted for – Tom Gates: Genius Ideas and Horrible Science: House of
Horrors – won their categories.

Headteacher Wendy Jacobs said the Year 5 and 6 students were thrilled to learn that their selections had taken the honours.

“Most of the children watched the show on Thursday night, but we also watched it at school on Friday morning for those that missed out,” she said.

“They’re so proud of themselves.”

South Walney Junior School also celebrated World Book Day in style, with the pupils tasked with making funky reading glasses for a competition.

Literacy subject teacher Michelle Banks said they also made pop-up books for younger members of the school, took part in a book-themed treasure train around the school, made bookmarks for a national competition and watched Big Read.

“The children loved learning how the authors structured their books, wrote the blurb, added in suspense and even
illustrated their books,” she said.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed their chance to have fun with books and come off the curriculum.”

South Walney Junior School head girl Bethany Wood said: “I really enjoyed making the pop-up books for Year 3 and the treasure hunt around the school.”
