Furness Model Boat Club's model submarine regatta

DOZENS of enthusiasts turned out to help Furness Model Boat Club celebrate Barrow’s rich nautical heritage with a model submarine regatta on Sunday.
Between 20 and 30 painstakingly pieced together scale models took to the water at Barrow Park to compete in a variety of sailing events.
Model submariners from as far afield as Edinburgh and Sunderland, as well as local devotees, were on hand for the popular annual event.
Boat club secretary and treasurer David Jacques was delighted with the turnout and said it had generated a lot of interest from the Barrow public.
“It went very well and everyone got together to have a good chat and the models sailed reasonable well,” he said.
“There were a lot of people in the park – a lot of visitors. The good weather helped because usually when we have these regattas it’s wet and windy, but it was a beautiful start and it was like that for most of the day.”
Mr Jacques, 73, of Harrel Lane, Barrow, has been building model submarines ever since his retirement from making the real things during a long career at the shipyard.
His model Soviet Alfa class submarine finished third in the regatta behind entries from winner John Wrennall of Preston and runner-up Paul Brassington of the Potteries.
