NEWBARNS Primary School may have had a delayed start to its Diamond Jubilee festivities – but that did nothing to dull the pupils’ enthusiasm.

On Tuesday – a few days later than ideal due to Year Six students being away on a trip – the school came together to celebrate the Queen’s 60-year reign.

The day began with students in all classes designing and decorating fancy hats and crowns before being tested on their knowledge of the royal family in quizzes.

Members of the Furness Building Society, which provided sponsorship, then handed out prizes to the makers of the best hat or crown in each class.

The students also had a picnic, enjoyed live music and released balloons into the air.

Assistant head Fiona Wilson said the Jubilee had been a terrific way for the children to learn about British history while having fun at the same time, adding: “It was a nice community feel.’’
