A BARROW woman was made Sport England North's Sport Maker of the Year yesterday.
The award recognises the people making sport happen as part of the official Olympic and Paralympic legacy programmes.
The award has a Sport Makers category, seeking to celebrate the individuals who are organising sport informally for themselves and their friends, colleagues or neighbours.
Nominees had to show an exceptional effort in helping adults to get more active, logging Sport Makers hours on www.sportmakers.co.uk and having an impact on the community in getting groups of people to come together.
Becky Underwood, Sportmakers lead at Active Cumbria, said: "Sonya fits all of the above criteria her energy and drive is incredible. Her ability to bring so many people together in Cumbria and motivate then so much is a real inspiration.
She added: "Sonya really is what the Olympic legacy is all about and she is a true Sportmaker."
Sonja is an incredibly sporty lady who works in the Leisure Centre in Barrow who came to a Sportmakers workshop in November 2011.
She had just completed a Run England Leadership in Running Fitness course and was looking for inspiration to set up running groups in the evenings.
She has since developed beginners sessions on Monday & Tuesday nights and advanced sessions on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, weekly attendees for her sessions are over 120 people.
