Barrow town centre parking costs under review

A REVIEW into parking charges in Barrow town centre is being carried out.

Policy review officer at Barrow Borough Council, John Penfold, has been tasked with examining car parks in the borough.

In addition, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, Councillor Dave Pidduck, said that the results of a trial 20p per hour scheme in a car park in Ulverston, being run by South Lakeland District Council, is being watched closely.

“We are looking at parking,” said Cllr Pidduck.

“We have got one of our officers looking at how the car parks are operating in the borough. Obviously if there is something that we can do to help parking then that is something that I am quite happy to look at. As all councils do, we contact other councils.

“I am keen to see what happens in South Lakes, and Ulverston as well because it is quite close to us. We are keen to see what their experience is.

“If there is a reason that during the trial the other car parks are not suffering and people are simply taking advantage of the lower charges, then we would be quite happy to take a look.

“We are also in the early stages of the budget so obviously we need to wait for that as well.”

The 20p SLDC trial was introduced on July 14 to test car parking tariffs at four under-used car parks across the district – in Ulverston, Grange, Kirkby Lonsdale and Kendal – to see if usage increased.

The scheme has also been welcomed by Ulverston Town Council and many residents have taken to the Evening Mail’s website to put their views forward.

The trial, brought in by South Lakeland District Council to increase usage of the Stockbridge Lane car park in Ulverston, is proving to be a success and could lead to the new tariff being used permanently, council bosses have told the Evening Mail.

A total of 783 tickets were sold during the last two weeks of July, when the trial was introduced, compared to 312 tickets sold during the whole month of July last year.

Revenue at the Ulverston car park has also increased, despite the lower tariffs.

Have your say

I recently wished to buy from a BARROW store an item advertised ON-line BUT with store PICK UP.
The most convenient parking was the ROOF TOP.
Having not visited the area for sometime I thought I would have look at other nearby shops to see if anything caught the eye.
I initially nearly choked at the outrageous charge for a few minutes stop-over but managed to ferret a few coins together!
The parking machine took my £2.20 yet yielded NO ticket so having no more change and realising how inaccessible the parking was if I was carrying anything I returned empty on my 20 mile homeward journey vowing NEVER to use this ripp off again!!!

Come on Barrow BC its not rocket science is it? Reduce the car parking costs for a trial period on Friday, Saturday and Sundays between now and Christmas to try and bring more shoppers into the town centre and help local shops especially with Xmas just around the corner and see how it goes?. Im guessing by the time this survey has taken place Christmas will be well and truly over?
As i said there is only one way to find out for yourselves. Suck it and see? Not waste our money by paying someone from your offices money to tell us what we already know!!
