32-year-old Phillip Holmes, of Windrush Crescent, Barrow was given the sentence at Furness and District Magistrates Court on 25th July 2012.

The sentencing follows an incident that occurred on the afternoon of 23rd July 2012 when Holmes entered the rear of The Custom House on Abbey Road, Barrow and once inside he went into the staff office and stole a purse from within a handbag belonging to a member of staff.

Police were called after a member of staff disturbed Holmes and he was identified by CCTV. Swift action by police officers meant that Holmes was located close to the scene and still in possession of some of the property.

DC Sarah McArthur of Barrow CID said: “Police acted quickly and efficiently to track down Holmes. He was traced and dealt with straight away. He was charged the day after the offence took place and he was remanded in custody. He then pleaded guilty and court and was sentenced there and then.

“Holmes committed this offence less than two weeks after leaving prison. I would like to thank the people that assisted us with the investigation and helped bring him to justice.”
