YOUNG people are being challenged to get inspired by what the variety of organisations in Furness have to offer at an event this Saturday.

The Big Idea will bring together a host of clubs and organisations offering activities for 12 to 18-year-olds.

The free event, which is being staged at The Park Leisure Centre, in Barrow, from 12.30pm to 4.30pm, has a "get off your gadgets and do something interesting instead" motto.

The Rotary Clubs of Furness Peninsula event will be attended by the army, air and sea cadets, St John's Ambulance, the Guides and the Scouts. From the arts and media there is Signal Film and Media, A590 Youth Theatre, Furness Music Centre, South Lakes Rock School and Radio Lonsdale.

The sport groups include Furness Judo Club, Kentai Karate Club Barrow Amateur Boxing Club and Furness Catholic Amateur Boxing Club.

Also represented will be Hawcoat Park Model Car Club, Interact, Drop Zone, Barrow Library and Youth Ability.

The rotary club organisers says the event is to promote youth organisations in the area to youngsters and show how having something to do outside of school can have so many positive benefits.

They say it can develop independence, self esteem, self reliance, motivation and broaden horizons to help have a positive effect on education, future job prospects and give a sense of pride for the young person and the community.

The Big Idea came about after a presentation by the air cadets to the rotary club.

The organisers hope young people and their parents will pop along to the event and find out what is on offer on their doorstep.
