A FOOTPATH blighted by overgrown weeds in Barrow is leading to fears for elderly residents' safety.
Sandra Currie shared pictures of the footpath near St Mary's Road in Barrow with The Mail to highlight the extent to which weeds have taken over.
Mrs Currie said her elderly mother regularly uses the footpath and as she is already unsteady on her feet, is concerned if the weeds are allowed to grow any more, someone could end up injured.
"My mum, who is 79, has to walk this way every day to go to the Co-op," Mrs Currie said.
"It is so overgrown that I am worried she will have a serious fall, as she can be unsteady on her feet."
In April, Barrow Borough Council scrapped its weed-spraying service in a bid to cut costs.
In response to a growing number of complaints about weeds on pavements and at the side of roads, Cumbria County Council decided to take on the role of weed killer even though it is not a statutory obligation, and action has started across Barrow.
The Mail has informed Cumbria County Council of Mrs Currie's concerns in the hope the footpath near St Mary's Road will be prioritised.
