CROWDS and competitors enjoyed a day of traditional fun at this year's annual Kirkby Gala.

The popular weekend of events kicked off yesterday with a family disco in the marquee which included the finals of the Burlington's Got Talent contest.

But today was when things really started to get going with visitors pouring onto the show field from 2pm.

An array of activities took place including cells races, children's fun sports, an entertainer, exhibitions and stalls as well as refreshments, a bar and barbecue.

Spectators mustered to watch a competitive field of runners for the under 12s fell race which kicked off at 2.30pm.

The first to cross the finish line was 11-year-old William Hall who had travelled for the event from Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire.

William said:"It feels really good to win."

William's mum, Ruth Crossley, added: "I am really proud of him."

Inside the marquee tent was an array of stalls for visitors to browse.

Kirsty Lloyd, of The Story Box, Askam, was there today exhibiting her books.

She said:"I love it, it's been great to play with the children who have been really interested in the interactive books."

Barbara Rabone was supporting St Mary's Hospice on one of the stalls.

She said:"This is my local village, I felt sure we would do well today if we came and we have. People have been very generous."

The gala will run for a third day tomorrow with a community praise taking place in the marquee from 10.15am.

There will then be an open gardens event between 11am and 4pm.

In total there are 12 gardens in the Four Lane Ends, Sandside, Soutergate and Beckside areas.
