Water skiing and porridge are the key to a long life for Barrow centenarian Joyce

Joyce Doling, of iconic Barrow company Doling's, celebrated her 100th birthday last week, citing her hearty breakfasts and love of water sports as a reason for reaching her century.

Mrs Doling, who turned 100 on October 14, spent countless happy hours in her younger days skiing on Windermere; days she looks back on with fond memories.

She said: "I used to water ski across Windermere. When I got to the other side, my family would be there with the kettle boiling."

To keep going Mrs Doling fuels herself every morning with a bowl of porridge, with only a light dusting of sugar.

She said: "I have Scott's Porage Oats every morning, with just a little bit of sugar. I'm sure they've kept me going this long."

Mrs Doling celebrated her birthday at the Risedale Care Home in Abbey Road.

Surrounded by her friends, family and carers she enjoyed some cake and a glass of sparkling wine to toast her big day.

Her cake was decorated with a spanner and hammer made of icing, to celebrate her long ties to the her family's business.

The Doling firm, which traded in Barrow for 145 years, only recently closed its doors.

Mrs Doling married Harold Doling in 1942. Their son, Alan, 69, said his mother was a popular and permanent fixture in the family shop for decades.

He said: "After I was born in 1948, she worked from around 1953 to 1995. People could recognise my mum in the shop."

Mrs Doling received a traditional birthday telegram from The Queen, but she and her son were more perplexed to receive a birthday telegram from the Department of Work and Pensions.

Mr Doling joked it was a gentle reminder his mother was "still on their books".
