EMERGENCY services were called to a Barrow supermarket car park after a vehicle became lodged on a bollard following a crash.

A black Nissan Micra was believed to have been driven on to the bollard, near the front of Tesco Extra in Hindpool Road, in Barrow, today.

Police cordoned off two disabled bays but the store remained open while the vehicle was recovered.

An eyewitness told The Mail he believed the driver was in his 50s and had tried to brake, but instead accelerated and crashed into the bollard just metres from the store's benches.

He said: "I heard someone say that they didn't brake but accelerated and went into the side of the car."

Josh Braithwaite, who witnessed emergency services recovering the vehicle, said: "I was just walking to the bus stop and I saw the blue flashing lights. I saw a car on the bollard."

Police confirmed they were called to Tesco at 11.36am after a two-vehicle collision was reported.

A spokesman said the collision resulted in the Micra ending up on top of another vehicle, a grey Vauxhall Zafira, which was parked in a disabled bay at the front of the store.

Police said none of the occupants of either car were injured.

Fire crews were called to the scene to make the area safe after a quantity of fuel spilled onto the road surface.
