ON Thursday students from across south Cumbria and the Millom area will be discovering how they did in their A-Levels.

The 18-year-olds will be finding out if they have secured university places and higher apprenticeships.

Among the students waiting for their grades is Ben O'Flynn. The Walney teenager will be collecting results in physics, biology, chemistry and maths from Barrow Sixth Form College.

Other students may be envious of Ben as he has secured himself an unconditional offer to study biomedical science at Lancaster University.

He knows he has a place on the degree course, but a top set of grades could also trigger a handy scholarship for Ben.

The entry requirement for the course is the expectation of grades AAB.

Ben, a former St Bernard's Catholic High School student, said: "I have an unconditional offer, but I want to get in on the best grades that I can."

The table tennis player who has represented the county is ready and looking forward for university after enjoying his two years at sixth form.

The honours programme student said: "I've loved my time at college. Everyone has been so helpful, they are not just teachers, they are great people."

Ben had looked into medicine degrees to work towards becoming a doctor, but he is instead looking at medical research as a career.

He said: "I felt with the way things are going with the government and the treatment of junior doctors that I would prefer to go into medical research."
