A SUCCESSFUL bodybuilder from Barrow is looking to conquer the world as he prepares to take on the best for a coveted world title.

Multiple bodybuilding champion Pat Ryan will be competing in the Mr Universe competition on October 29 in Birmingham.

Made up to be taking part

Mr Ryan, of Abbots Vale, said: "I am absolutely made up to be part of it. I have only ever done the likes of the Lakes Classic and winning the North West title.

"Stepping up a level is massive and it has been a dream for me. I'm really happy about it."

The 36-year-old, who trains at Flex Appeal gym, in Hartington Street, has been in excellent form in competitions of late, bringing home six trophies from his last five shows.

Passing on experience

The owner of Flex Appeal, Stan Dewhurst, 53, also of Barrow, won the Super Body Class in the over-40s section at Mr Universe in Germany in 2007.

Mr Dewhurst has been helping Mr Ryan and other aspiring bodybuilders at the gym get in shape for such events and pass on his own experience.

Speaking about what the competition demands, Mr Dewhurst said: "It is very difficult to explain what it is like to diet strictly.

"If you have never done it and never competed you would never be able to pass that experience on. I do think you need to be able to pass that on.

"I think he will do well and very good luck to him."
