Police are investigating a road traffic collision which occurred just after midnight today on Dalkeith Street, Barrow.

A white BMW 135i, understood to be a 2016 model, was involved in a collision and ended up on its roof after hitting the shop front of R&T Music.

No-one was injured in the incident but considerable damage has been caused to the front of the shop. The owner of the store, Vaughan Phelps, was contacted shortly after the collision by police and is awaiting assessments by insurers and structural engineers.

Mr Phelps turned down the chance to talk to the Evening Mail about the crash citing that he was not in the right state of mind to discuss the damage that had been caused.

Gareth Benson, who owns taxi firm Barrow Cars in Dalkeith Street, which is next to Mr Phelps' shop, witnessed the immediate aftermath of the crash.

He said: "I was sat inside when I heard the noise and I thought it was a bomb going off. Two lads managed to pull the driver out of the passenger side of the car and he was very lucky given the state of the vehicle.

"If it had been on a Friday or Saturday night he would have taken out a fair few people because they lean on the windows on this street having a cigarette, so it was very lucky that this happened on Sunday."

The collision is understood to have been captured on CCTV footage.

The glass has since been cleaned up off the floor and the window boarded up with the store still operating as normal.

A 23-year-old Barrow man has been arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and is being questioned by police.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Barrow CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
