A NUMBER of roads and bridges have been closed across Cumbria after they have been deemed to be structurally unsafe. 

The Met Office has issued more weather warnings and has said heavy rain will persist throughout most of today with gusts of up to 60mph also expected. 

ROAD CLOSURES

SOUTH LAKES: Major structural failure has been experienced on the A591 main route through the Lake District with a distance of some 21 miles completely impassable. The diversion is a distance of 41 miles.

ULLSWATER: Major structural failure has been experienced on the A592 at Ullswater. The diversion route is 51 miles. 

LANGWATHBY: Major structural failure has been experienced on the A686. The diversion route is approx. 70 miles. 

HOWTOWN: The C3042 is impassable and the community is isolated. Military resources are supporting local teams to assess temporary solutions.

Outbreaks of rain will affect the region this morning but it should be drier for a time around midday. More persistent and heavy rain is then expected during the afternoon. It will be windy too, with gales likely. Maximum Temperature 11°C.

TRAFFIC & TRAVEL (from Cumbria Police/Cumbria County Council)

CARLISLE: Eden Bridge in Carlisle remains closed to all traffic, including pedestrians. Rickerby Memorial Footbridge is also closed pending repairs. Hardwicke Circus is closed, except for construction vehicles going to Civic Centre to deal with post-flood clean up.

PENRITH: Eamont Bridge near Penrith has been re-closed to allow more detailed inspections now that river levels have begun to subside. Again traffic should use alternative routes this morning.

STAVELEY: The bridge at Back Lane is closed because of flooding. Gowan Old Bridge and Abbey Bridge have been partially lost.

SHAP: The A6 is closed at Shap because of flooding.

GLENRIDDING: Greenside Road is closed.

KESWICK: Greta Bridge is closed because of flooding.

A66: Vehicles which are affected by strong winds are being advised to avoid using the A66.

No closures affecting South Cumbria, a number of schools are closed in Carlisle.
