DEVELOPERS behind a multi-million pound revamp on Barrow Island have hosted a community litter pick to help clean up the area's streets.

Lisa Hart, who manages the £12m Maritime apartments transformation, organised the event, which saw residents cleaning up Ramsden Dock Road, Schooner Street, Steamer Street and Ship Street on September 7.

The Barrow-born manager is keen to change the public's perception of the area and hopes to make the clean a regular occurrence.

She said: "I want people to see the area in a different light.

"They've spent so much money on this development so its very important to keep the area clean.

"The island will be fab when we have finished.

"The word is spreading and I think people are now taking it into their own hands and people are coming together as a community now."

Members of the council, project staff, police and residents all turned up to take part in the litter pick as Ms Hart's passion for regenerating the area seems to have resonated across the community.

"There's just not enough public bins around here and another problem is that people are sharing bins, and if you're standing there with a bin bag in your hand and your bin is full, where do you go with all that rubbish?

"And there's so many seagulls here and it's just all a vicious circle," she added.

A series of gardens and outdoor spaces have been installed across the area as work on the development enters its final stages.

Three new gardens encompassing trees, benches and a concrete tennis table and chess board all form part of the new multi-functioning area, which Ms Hart hopes people from across the area will use.

"It's absolutely gorgeous.

"It's a communal area, for everyone, and we want to have buskers there and hope staff from BAE can have lunch outside there," said Ms Hart.

A Maritime Garden Party will be held on October 5, from 3pm to 7pm in the new gardens in Barque Street, within the newly-named "Maritime Streets".
