RESIDENTS in an area of Barrow have been criticised for leaving open binbags containing food and piles of rubbish beside their wheelie bin before they are emptied.

One elderly resident of Melbourne Street in Barrow contacted The Mail this morning to ask us to visit the backstreets surrounding his home.

He explained that although it was bin day for his street, the binmen had not been yet and the resident said it was unfair to blame the binmen for the state of the alleys.

"Everyone is saying 'the streets are left in a state after the binmen have been' but this is before they've even been - there's piles of dirty nappies and food everywhere, would you expect the binmen to pick up dirty nappies?" he said.

The resident, who did not wish to be named, said people need to be more mindful of the seagulls which eagerly wait for bags to be left out so they can feast on the contents.

"You can't blame the binmen for this," he added.

"If people put out their bins like you're supposed to, we wouldn't have this problem.

"People need to take pride in where they live and take responsibility for their own community. But the problem is that too many people don't care and just assume someone else will clear up after them.

"I'm not saying all the litter problems are because of this, but I do think it's unfair to just blame the binmen when it's not their fault."

The Mail has contacted FCC Environment, which runs the household waste collection service for Barrow Borough Council, for a statement.
